I am Malikbir Singh, a writer of short fiction and personal essays.
Much of my writing begins with ordinary lives: a conversation overheard, a road remembered, a family ritual, a decision made years ago that refuses to remain in the past. I am interested in memory, belonging, regret, dignity, and the small moments through which people reveal who they are.
I grew up in India and spent more than two decades in the Indian Army before moving to the United Kingdom. Those years took me through different landscapes, communities and lives, and many of the stories here carry traces of those places and encounters.
Chasing Rainbows began as a place to gather these pieces together. The name comes from an old memory from Kashmir, and from the idea that even difficult lives can contain moments of colour, hope and unexpected grace.
Some of the work here is fiction. Some comes from lived experience. Much of it sits somewhere in between, where memory becomes story.
